Does it identify a permanent room or space?

If yes, the designation generally needs tactile raised characters and Braille. Directional and informational signs generally follow visual-character rules. Some content is exempt.

Scope it before you quote it

Permanent room and space designations generally need tactile and visual content. Directional and informational signs are usually visual only. Directories, temporary signs posted 7 days or less, occupant names, menus, logos and addresses are common exemptions.

Build the tactile message correctly

Tactile characters are raised at least 1/32 inch, uppercase, sans serif and non-decorative. Contracted Grade 2 Braille / UEB is placed below the corresponding text, with clearance from borders and other tactile elements.

Mount where it can be found

Measure tactile content from the baseline: the lowest tactile character is at least 48 inches above the finished floor and the highest is no more than 60 inches. At a single door, use the latch side; preserve a clear tactile-reading space beyond the door swing.

Treat pictograms as their own field

When a pictogram identifies a permanent room or space, its field is at least 6 inches high. Raised text and Braille sit below that field. Directional or informational pictograms do not use that tactile descriptor layout.

A strong install begins with the right surface, material and handoff. Use these steps to spot the information that production and installers need before the job becomes urgent.

Use the product data sheet for temperatures, approved substrates, cure times, application method and warranty terms. These guides help frame the job; they do not replace a manufacturer’s instructions.

File-ready artwork center

Vector art is the difference between cutting a shape and printing a picture.

Routing and laser cutting follow mathematical paths. A JPG, PNG, screenshot or flattened PDF may look correct on screen, but it does not give the machine a line to cut.

The non-negotiable rule

Routing and laser cutting require vector art.

Vector files are built from points, lines and curves. They can be scaled without losing definition and give a router or laser a precise path to follow. Raster images are built from pixels; they are ideal for photographs and printed graphics, but cannot become reliable cut paths just by enlarging them.

PPI describes your image file. DPI describes the printer.

For artwork handoff, check PPI at the final printed dimensions. Enlarging a raster file lowers its effective PPI. 72 PPI is not a universal print minimum: it can work for a large graphic viewed from far away, but it is usually too soft for close-view signs, photos and fine detail.

The hard truth

A bigger file is not a higher-resolution file.

Scaling a raster image larger only makes the pixels larger. Saving or exporting a JPG, PNG or screenshot as .AI, .EPS or .PDF does not turn it into vector art—it is still a raster image inside a different file container. For routing, laser cutting and contour cutting, the artwork must be redrawn or properly traced into clean, editable vector paths.

Provide AI, SVG, EPS or a PDF with editable vector paths. Outline approved type, close paths and remove duplicate lines. The router follows the vector path.

A high-resolution JPG, TIFF or PNG can print beautifully at final size. It is made of pixels, so it cannot directly tell a router or laser where to cut.

Build a production-ready file

Use this handoff sequence.

  1. Start at final sizeState the finished width and height in inches; include quantity, panels, seams and installation orientation.
  2. Separate every operationKeep print art, white ink, cut paths, score lines, engrave fills and drill marks on clearly named layers.
  3. Turn cut lines into real pathsOutline text when approved, expand strokes where required, close paths and remove overlapping or duplicate vectors.
  4. Protect printed workAdd bleed and safe areas; keep critical text, logos and fine details away from trim, grommets, welds and cut edges.
  5. Package the proofInclude a PDF proof, the native/vector source when available, linked images, finish notes and the approved production method.

Common file trap

“It is a PDF” does not mean it is vector.

A PDF can contain live vector paths, raster images, or both. Confirm the art has editable paths before a routing, laser or contour-cut job enters production. When in doubt, send the source file or request a vector redraw.

Plain-English file answers

When the customer says, “I have a logo,” ask one more question.

Is it a cuttable vector file, a printable raster file, or only a picture of a logo? The answer determines the production path.

Can I send a PDF?+

Yes, but a PDF is a container, not a file type guarantee. It can hold live vector paths, flattened images, or both. For a cut job, open it in Illustrator, CorelDRAW or another vector editor and confirm the cut shapes are editable paths.

Can I use Canva artwork?+

Often for print, yes—if it is exported at final size with adequate resolution. For routing, laser cutting or contour cuts, it still needs clean vector paths. Send the original design link or source export when possible so the production team can confirm it.

Can a low-resolution logo be made cuttable?+

Sometimes. Simple one-color marks can be redrawn or traced into usable vector paths. Detailed artwork, gradients, photographs and fuzzy screenshots usually need a proper vector redraw—not an automatic trace.

What should I send when I am not sure?+

Send the original source file, any linked images, a PDF proof, final dimensions, material, and whether the job prints, cuts, engraves or all three. A short production note prevents a long remake.

What can I sell?

Sell the package—not just the sign they remembered to ask for.

ACM+

Aluminum composite material: two thin aluminum faces bonded to a rigid core. Popular for durable flat signs.

Bleed+

Extra artwork beyond the trim edge so cutting does not leave an unwanted white line.

Calendered vinyl+

Vinyl rolled into shape. Usually economical and best on flat or gently curved surfaces.

Cast vinyl+

Thin, conformable premium vinyl made by casting liquid film. Best for curves, rivets and long-term work.

Contour cut+

A cut path that follows the shape of printed artwork instead of making a rectangle.

Edge lift+

When film begins pulling away at an edge, often caused by poor surface prep, tension, shrinkage or the wrong material for the job.

FCO+

Flat cut-out letters or logos routed or laser-cut from acrylic, PVC, ACM, metal or another sheet material.

First surface+

Graphics applied to the front, outside-facing side of a sign or clear panel. This is the normal choice when the print or vinyl should be directly visible.

Grommet+

A reinforced metal ring installed in a banner or sign for hanging, tying down or mounting.

Kerf+

The width of material removed by a router, laser, saw or cutting tool. Account for it when parts must fit precisely.

Kiss cut+

A cut through the vinyl face film only, leaving the release liner intact. Common for sticker sheets.

Laminate+

A clear protective film over a print for improved abrasion, chemical and UV resistance.

Opacity+

How well a material blocks what is behind it. Blockout films prevent show-through; clear films do not.

Panel overlap+

The shared printed area between large-format panels that helps graphics align and install cleanly.

Raster Braille+

Domed Braille beads inserted into precisely drilled holes; a durable ADA production method.

Registration marks+

Printed alignment marks a cutter reads to match a contour-cut path to the artwork.

Safe area+

The protected space inside a finished edge where important text, logos and details should stay away from trim, grommets and cuts.

Second surface+

Graphics applied to the back side of clear material and viewed through the front. Artwork is usually mirrored before printing or cutting so the viewing side reads correctly.

Substrate+

The base material a sign is made from or a graphic is applied to.

Tack+

How aggressively an adhesive grabs during installation.

Tactile sign+

An ADA sign with raised characters and Braille designed to be read by touch.

Translucent vinyl+

Color film engineered to transmit and diffuse light for illuminated signs.

Weeding+

Removing unwanted vinyl after plotter cutting.

Window perf+

Perforated print film that shows a graphic on one side while preserving visibility from the other.
